Why Noise Guard

The internet isn't loud by accident

Autoplay, infinite scroll, countdown timers, heated comment sections: these aren't coincidences and they aren't side effects. They're patterns deliberately built to generate measurably more time and attention. Here's how they work, and what Noise Guard actually does about them.

Attention is the actual currency

Most free platforms don't earn money from what you see, but from how long you see it. Every additional minute on a site is economically valuable, regardless of whether that minute benefits you at all. That creates a clear incentive: build systems that are hard to leave.

Autoplay is the clearest example. Without a conscious decision, the next piece of content starts automatically. The psychological threshold to actively stop is much higher than the threshold to simply keep watching. Infinite scroll works similarly: it removes every natural stopping point (the end of a page) at which you would normally pause and decide whether to continue.

Noise Guard picks up exactly at these stopping points: it detects autoplay and mutes the sound, it detects infinite-scroll feeds and shows a subtle hint after a while asking whether you really want to keep scrolling. The decision stays with you. Noise Guard only restores the stopping point that the design deliberately removed.

Artificial scarcity and urgency

"Only 2 left in stock", a countdown timer that resets every time you reload the page: these patterns exploit a well-studied cognitive effect called loss aversion. People feel a potential loss (missing out on something) more strongly than an equivalent gain. Artificially created time pressure partly disables careful weighing and favors quick, less considered decisions.

Noise Guard detects such phrasing patterns locally and makes them visible, instead of automatically judging them for you. The display is deliberately restrained: "Pattern for artificial scarcity detected", not "This website is scamming you." Noise Guard doesn't know the intent behind a phrase, only the pattern itself.

Why conflict gets more reach than calm discussion

Outrage demonstrably spreads faster than neutral or positive content, because it triggers a stronger physical and emotional reaction. Platforms whose recommendation systems optimize for engagement almost inevitably amplify sharper, more aggressive posts, regardless of whether that's intentional.

Noise Guard filters comments locally based on language patterns (aggressive phrasing, recurring provocation, so-called ragebait) and additionally groups very similar comments together, instead of showing the same opinion ten times side by side. None of this changes what other people wrote, it only changes what you see first.

What Noise Guard can't do, and we say so

Noise Guard works with local, heuristic rules. That means: it can miss context, it can be wrong on particularly new or unusual phrasing, and it can't detect every form of manipulation on every site. Websites also constantly change their structure, which temporarily breaks individual detections.

We could advertise Noise Guard as infallible. We deliberately don't. A tool that knows its own limits is more trustworthy than one that admits none.
